Can a creditor disclose info to my parents?

My mom told me that a creditor called her today and told her they were trying to reach me and that there would be legal action against me or legal action was pending against me since they counldn't contact me Is that legal? They only have my mom's number b/c I used it as a contact number on my application. But are they allowed to tell her that?
